I recently purchased a 25hp tohatsu from a buddy. I removed the restrictor plate and installed the appropriate 30hp open gasket. My timing is set at 25 degrees wot in gear. My question is with throttle fully backed off, what should the timing be at idle? My buddy had jacked with the wrong linkages and just want to put them back like supposed to be. I have timing right at wot. Just need the timing for idle. Thanks a bunch!

Is your idle steady? Does it accelerate correctly? If so, and knowing that WOT advance is correct, you are probably fine. Look in the Factory service manual, available from and dealer (including me) to completely run through the sync settings.

If useless grip slack at full right position is an issue for anybody : Loosen nut CCW, adjust stopper B CC fully in, secure nut. Doing this and depending on the model will advance timming mark from -2, -4? to O?. Will need to readjust idle pawl screw about 1mm CCW to lower rpm that has raised by advancing stopper to new position.

Adjust idle speed low enough to hear a dry clak when gear shifts forward and engine does not die when at idle & gear. If dies, adjust CC a bit to reach that condition. Check pics of standard throttle grip factory seting and new setting.

We do this re setting on new M18E2, M25C3/30A4 models, will have a shorter throttle grip response and better hand angle from idle to wot than before.

Happy Boating
