Hello, I'm new here and have a 1985 17 ft. Bayliner Capri and just noticed this condition with the propeller after running over a submerged rock wall (see picture). Needless to say, I know next to nothing about boats. The drive seemed to run fine after it happened, but I just noticed what seems to be a missing protective ring. There also seems to be a lightweight metal ring loose inside there that doesn't seem right. Is it the "zinc annode ring" that I am missing? Can I run the drive without it? How easy is this repair? Thanks so much in advance for any advice or suggestions.

Welcome to iboats and sorry about the rocks. I don't think I've ever heard of anyone hitting the bottom with their prop! Well, maybe once or twice

You've got a few things to look at. You're right about the zinc missing. They're not too expensive and should be replaced soon. The large washer you see is the line cutter. It's on a collar and if it's rattling, then the welds have snapped and it's loose on the shaft. It's another $30 part that you need to replace. It won't hurt anything to not have one short term but it really needs to be replaced.

Take a good look at the prop. large nicks and dings need to be repaired. The imbalance can cause bearing damage. Another thing to check is to see if the prop has slipped on the hub. There's a rubber insert in the prop that is supposed to let go instead of causing damage to the shaft in the event of a major hit. To check it, make a mark across the hub with a magic nmarker. If the lines don't match up after running the boat in the water, then the prop needs to be rebuilt.

Here's a link to a list of manuals that should help you out: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?p=2360521#post2360521

There's also a separate section for props where you'll find more detailed discussions of your specific problem - this just might have happened before!

Thanks so much for your reply-- I really appreciate all the information. Sorry for the stupidity but where exactly should I make the mark to check for prop slippage?

You'll need to remove the prop nut (cone) and the washer. There may be a screw in the end of the cone going into the shaft - some have it, some older ones don't. Possibly a spacer as well - depends on if you have a short or long shaft drive. You'll need to see the rear surface of the prop. Just draw a line from the shaft outwards. magic marker works well or may try some paint.

Here's a drawing:

The manuals that I pointed you to in the last post will be a tremendous help. You really should download the ones for your outdrive and engine and start to get familiar with things.
