I bought a 1967 Evinrude Sportsman 155 with a 155 hp Buick and omc outdrive...It was in storage for 2 years and was well took care of...Motor fires up..but cant get water tru block when sinking outboard in tub of water...Maybe I'm scared and not running long enough,,but dont want to damage engine because water temp. and has a idiot light instead of gauge...What I'm wondering,,is it suppose to take in water like a outboard does as soon as you fire up,,or does the thermostat supppose to open before it takes in water...I'll replace the thermostat,,but like I said,,I'm new to inboards,,and cant really figure what suppose to happen first..I hope I explaned all ok,,and all help is greatly appreciated....Take care all..

I don't know a whole lot about this subject, but I have a 97' 4.3 Mercruiser w/ Alpha One Drive, and it pulls water through the engine almost immediately. It definitely starts before the engine has a chance to warm to operating temp.

CP

Assuming the engine water jackets (I/O) & water pump housing have water in them at all, the outlet water jet should be visible with-in a few seconds. Unlike some (Mercury) outboards that take up to 15 seconds to generate the outlet jet. Even if the engine is completely dry, the engine & stern drive water pump will suck in water to the rest of the system almost immediately. (Please do not try to suck water into a dry block, however - at least remove t-stat housing and fill). If this does not occur, check to see if the rubber impeller on the stern drive unit is damaged or melted.

You probably need to change the impeller in the outdrive, especially if the boat had been sitting. If you have electric shift and you ever decide to take the outdrive off make sure you do not damage the shift wire. Any cuts breaks or splices can cause serious problems
