First could you please tell me the year of my motor with the following information Mercury 115HP Model:1150 Serial:3272796. I placed the motor in a drum of water and to my surprise started right up, I was told that it was setting for about 6 yrs. How can I tell if the water pump is working correctly? I was under the impression that I would see water being sprayed out of the outlet holes near the top of the lower power unit. The only thing I noticed were bubbles coming from the prop at idle, which is as far as I went with it. Also I would like to double check the mixture ratio. I was using 30oz. to 12 gallons of gas. Is this the correct ratio to use of this motor? Is there anything else that should be checked due to the amount of time the boat was sitting? Thanks.

Re: Newbie.....Questions

Boatyt,
I don't have my information at home so I can't tell you what year it is,but a good rule of thumb is to mix 3oz of two cycle oil to each gallon of fuel.
If the engine had been setting for as long as you say I would definately change the water pump impeller. You should see water comming out of the exaust relief holes under the power head but on the lower leg.
Sorry that I can't be more help

Re: Newbie.....Questions

Hi Boaty

Congratulations. It is not the first time i heard stories like this. Not fair. A lot of people who baby their motor, using fogging oil, draining for gas etc, and what do they get ? Troubles running after one winther !!

Other people just throw their engine on the field for 6 yrs and put gas on : Wrooom Wrooom. No justice anywhere !!!

To be serious - you at least have to change the water pump impeller to be sure it will work. A mercs have a telltale hole where the water spits out to tell you its cooling, below cowling, at the back somewhere. Dont run it more than 20 secs, before your sure, or your luck will end.

Hello Boatyt
I agree with installing a new impeller. Also run a piece of wire up the tail-tell outlet. This is a magnet for dirtdobbers.

Re: Newbie.....Questions

Thanks everyone for the advice and info. I will get a service manual and replace the impeller and change the gear oil next weekend. Are there any tricks I should know about. Thanks again! Great Forums!
