New to us outboard (125) did not come with a starter rope? Should I get one? And if so, are they pretty standard or do I need a certain one for this motor?

Thanks!

Re: Newbie question - Starter rope

I wouldn't go out without a rope to start my motor. My 150 hp doesn't have one built in, but I have a length of rope for those just in case moments. Any rope will do in a pinch, as long as it fits in the notch to hold it.

Should have one. That engine will start with a stone dead battery with a rope. If it's a clamshell cowl, the rope stows in a pocket inside one of the covers.

Hope you never have to use it. You'll be sore from the effort if you do.

hope it helps

That's interesting... I forgot all about the rope. Just got stranded and had to get towed, but there is a rope inside my cowl. In my case, my starter motor had died, and the engine was warm because we were just switching skiers when it wouldn't start. Is it hard to start a 115HP 2 cycle with the rope, or do you need to be a body builder to have enough strength to pull it?

Most folks in good health can do it. You'll probably be sore in the morning. It's certainly worth a try if you're looking at a tow charge. Maybe not if yer close and another boater is willing to throw you a line.

Re: Newbie question - Starter rope

We were close enough that I was using my trolling motor to get to the dock and someone saw me and threw me a line. Would have been a lot easier getting it onto the trailer though if it were running. Was a very windy day. Since the motor was warm it would have probably started right up with the rope... never even occurred to me because the motor is so big in comparison to anything I've ever started with a rope.

I started my 1973 Merc 1500 with a rope, and it was cold. Not saying it was fun, but doable.
