I've had a 1989 27' Sea Ray for about 7 years. Replaced the outdrive about 6 years ago. It is a Bravo 1. Last fall, our last time out we hit the throttle to get on plane and the boat stopped and revved like it was in nuetral. We figured it was the throttle cable but thats not the case. Our mechanic says there is an issue with the outdrive and he cant figure it out. He says there is no pressure on the outdrive when he moves the prop. Any ideas what the peoblem could be?

Welcome to iboats......:)
The problem is the mechanic, if he can't figure it out....
Did it have any forward motion at all?....

Spun prop????

Just a guess based on what you stated your problem was. But a good garage mechanic should be able to diagnose that one. Remove your prop and check the condition. Could be it just spun on the hub.

Good Luck

Rob.

A spun prop would work at idle speed, though, in a limp-home mode, wouldn't it?

The boat moves when putting it in forward just slightly but if you try to go any faster it just revvs. Reverse seems to work okay also.

I'd see if it is the prop hub slipping.....
Put on your spare prop & see if that works....
If you don't have a spare, you should get one....
Hopefully, it's just the hub......:)

I'd bet my "cadets" pay you spun the hub on your prop.....this has happened to me before. Luckily, I did have a spare, and a local prop repair shop that installed a new hub in less than a week for $50.

I do have a spare prop but when I turn the prop that is on right now it stops. If it was a spun prop wouldn't I be able to keep spinning it around because the hub would be broke.(forgive me if that is a stupid question). I just feel that my mechanic would have caught that, he is a reputable mechanic from around the area. Who knows..I'll check tonight and maybe it was overlooked

You would have to really crank on it to make it spin by hand. Most rubber hubs are designed to provide low rpm capability to get home, but they will just spin if put under load/high rpm......does that make sense?

New information.....Boat has no ability to move forward or reverse. Not even at an idle speed. Had it for about 2 min after it happened then was lost. Throttle cable did not snap it is fine. Any more ideas?

Re: Newbie... Outdrive problem need help!

my omc/cobra was right around $600 for labor - I purchased the gears seperately. Plus, I had already torn it most of the way down.
That was a few years ago, and I'm guessing it varies pretty widely depending on the shop.
On top of that - without knowing what else is damaged there's no way to know what the cost for repair will amount to.

I would be curious to know if the magnet on the lowest gear lube plug is loaded with shavings.

Curious to know outcome - having the same issue with my Alpha One outdrive. Took to shop this morning and will be 2 weeks before they can even look at it.
