Hello everyone. Newbie here.
Picked up a 1990 evinrude 115 and had it out for the 1st time. At first was cutting out surging at almost any speed but as it ran longer got better but still cuts out at full throttle. Suspecting gummed up jets. would it hurt to add carb cleaner to fuel such as gumout. Don't know any real history of motor, man I purchased it from took it in as a trade-in app. a year ago.Felt it ran strong, matching the older 1978 140 I use to have with a 17 pitch prop on a 20 ft tritoon. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for any help given.

My first thought is intermitant fuel starvation caused possibly by air getting in to a fuel line or connector. Check the connections.

It wouldn't hurt to put a carb cleaner in but if the carb has crud in it the best thing is to rebuild it. Gumout will not do the job correctly.

You can also use a timing light to check each plug wire and see if you have nice steady flashes on each plug when it is missing, maybe you have a coil breaking down under load.
