Newbie engine care

Hi,<br /><br />I am new to boating and just purchased a new boat with a mecrusier I/O 220 alpha 1 sterndrive. I have noticed alot of posts concerning engine problems. I was wondering what I could do to prevent potential problems besides the recommended maintenance by the manufacturer. How often do you change the oil? Filters? etc. Is there something that I can do now that will help me in the future. Thank you insight and patience...Thom

Follow the reccomended maintenance schedule and if you bought this boat used or if you bought it new, Have the engine alignment checked at least every year or every other year. You can cause alot of damage if the engine goes out of alignment. I pay to have mine winterized and have them change the oil in the engine and lower unit, fuel filter and oil filter at the end of the summer. The manual will tell you the maintenance schedule.
