I inherited a '65(?)Evinrude 60 HP outboard.
It does not idle properly. When I put it
into forward, the motor dies. I turned the
idle screw clockwise and realigned the
throttle cable trunnion, as indicated in the
manual. I got it to run, but the idle still
sounds slow and weak. Any help would be
appreciated. The carburetor has been
completely rebuilt a couple of weeks ago.

What other problems should I expect with a
motor this old? Should I have it completely
overhauled when it is stored for the Winter?

Thanks for your help.

Pete Brittain

Re: Newbie...a couple of questions

Probably your best diagnostic tool at this point might be a compression tester. Mark which plug wire goes where with some masking tape wrapped around the wire and marked with a felt marker. Now hook up a compression tester on one plug hole at a time with all the plugs removed and write down the readings while you turn the motor over with the starter.

What the numbers are doesn't matter as much as their relationship to one another. You want the numbers within 15% of each other. If that reads out ok then you might want to double check the points in the ignition.

I've also heard also that some of the older OMC's will sometimes lose the crankshaft seals making for hard to idle and poor running. ;)
