Looks like the girls suspected it was going to get painful.

Re: Newb power boater learns on the fly

watch it in slow motion and you have to wonder what he was doing. hes pumping the thottles before he wipes out then when he goes flying and hits the side of the boat one of the girls then grabs him by the head and slams it against the side again. the other girl falls and as she grabs at something to get up she pulls the shifter into netrual...

OUCH!

The face plants were bad enough, but the gal who falls starboard nailed the handles and bent 'em on the way. Didn't help that everyone was standing up at speed.

Hope everyone was ok but it's a perfect example of too much power and not enough brains!

all those nice sofa seats and they are all riding at high speed standing up or sitting on the back platform. No brains among them.

Re: Newb power boater learns on the fly

I saw this on another forum:

Hey guys, I was a passenger in this boat during the accident. Yes, there are many cardinal rules broken. The most important one I feel is no life jackets worn. As crazy as it seems, we had jackets for each person but as the poker run began we realized no one else was wearing them..... How foolish we were. I have read so many nasty comments on YouTube and other sites I am in shock. My wife suffered 4 broken ribs, punctured lung and a broken foot. She has not left the house since getting home. She is in severe pain. The driver crushed his eye orbital and broke hus back at T8 ( he is a former F-2 racer with APBA). Another passenger who raced professionally for many years broke his pelvis in several places and is in a wheelchair. One of the other girls crushed her eye orbital also. The guy from lake tv fractured his hip and broke his wrist. My injuries were minor compared, busted my head open and damaged a rib or two. Everyone is black and blue. This was a very upsetting event for everyone involved. I have been around powerboats for many years and it only takes on unguarded minute to loose a life or permanently hurt people you love. I am very thankful this did not end up worse. I hope everyone learns from this. I know I will boat differently. All of the guys in the boat are members of OSO. I think it is necessary to break down the accident and discuss this, just remember these are real people who like you who love power boating and do it every weekend

Wow, thanks for posting flamingo! I knew it hurt 'em, but didn't know it was quite that bad. Lessons to all of us, and best wishes to the folks hurt.

For anyone that hates MSN as much as I do, here is the REAL link, minus the MSN wrapper...

Anyway, amazing nobody was killed in that... The post above of her response adds a lot to it. They were experienced boaters who let peer pressure put them into a bad situation (no life jackets), and murphy decided to ride on their boat when they took the life jackets off. It only takes a second for things from go to fine to OH $%@#!

Re: Newb power boater learns on the fly

rules were broken but even if they had been followed the injury list would still have been bad. the jackets might have acted as body armour and saved a few ribs but the throttles were back when it finnal bucked the passangers so the safety line wouldnt have saved them any injurys. safety rules are writen in someones blood and i feel bad for the people as i dont want to see anyone hurt but i would like to know what caused the boat to act in this manner so i never end up in the same situation myself.

Wow, that hurts me just watching it. DIdn't it look like the driver was unconscious BEFORE he hit the deck? I didn't see his head hit anything, but it sure looked that way the way he took a face plant. Man oh man. I think we all could take something valuable from this video. The water ain't soft when you're nailing the throttle and experience doesn't matter one iota. You could tell they were riding the side of a wake the way the boat almost laid down on her side. Sheesh. Hope this doesn't turn any of them off boating.

Re: Newb power boater learns on the fly

thanks for the solid information to replace the speculation.

From that, I think the take-away point is that serious injury from avoidable accidents occur with the experienced, too (the thread says "newb" and now we know that is very incorrect). Sometimes it's nature that gets everyone. More often, it's the over-confidence that comes from experience and skill. Whenever I think I have it down, God sends a smack my way to remind me who's in charge.

In doing any outdoor activities, there are no rewards or punishments, only consequences.

Good luck with the healing. I have a good buddy whom broke his back whilst doing extreme mountain unicycling. From what it sounds like it's a painful thing to experience but recovery could be good... in his case he's right back on the mountain unicycling.

Yeah, the original article indicated that he was inexperienced. Guess I should have known better than to take it at face value. I considered editing the title but not sure to what.

Already 3 or 4 other threads on this in various forums here so maybe just let this one die of old age.
