Hi all can someone please advise me of the most reliable new 150 hp two stroke on the market i`m re powering and don`t know which way to go!I do more skiing than fishing so hole shot , and excellent throttle response is high on the list most dealers over here seem to think the 4 strokes won`t cut it as a ski motor. Haven`t heard too many good things about the E-TEC or OPTI MAX can`t seem to find out much on the Vmax HPDI does anyone out there own a currant or recent model of any of these engines? Would appreciate any feedback possible!!!

I wouldn't worry so much about a 4 stroke. HP is HP no matter how it is created. a 150 four will put out just as much power as a 150 two stroke. May even be a little better hole shot as two strokes usually need RPMs to develop full power.

Old wives tales aside, mate, there are no bad outboards on the market. Just different features on good outboards. I like 4 stroke quiet and smoothness, 4 stroke and ETEC economy and user friendliness.

I think you would need a stopwatch to tell differences in properly propped and rigged 150HP outboards, regardless of shade tree wisdom.

If your boat has a weight issue for the transom, that may help you choose a new motor. 4 cycle motors are a bit heavier than the DI motors. If no weight issue, than pick whatever yu get the best deal on. My neighbor has a 4 cycle Merc 225, it runs quiet and efficient. My other neighbor has an 150HP Optimax. It sounds a bit different than a carbed 2 cycle motor, but runs fine. There are some e-TEC motors in the neighborhood, however, I hve never operated them.

4 strokes are more fuel efficient which may be especially important down under.

More mythology.

Four strokes are not automatically more fuel efficient than DFI and ETEC. They do not have more low end torque than 2 strokes and they are not significantly heavier than most DFI 2 strokes.

Those are all myths created by people with an axe to grind.

The facts: All EFI 4 stroke and DFI 2 stroke 150HP outboards on the market are comparable. The best one for you is the best deal from a nearby dealer.

If you find a carbed 2 stroke, it will be lighter, noisier, smokier, smellier, dirtier and thirstier that a EFI 4 stroke or DFI 2 stroke. Carbed 4 strokes are somewhere between and rare.

good to know. Looks like the distinction is carbs v. FI.

what is your opinion on the view that carbs handle bad gasoline better than EFI/DFI? Not in the perfect world where all gas comes in good condition, is treated, stored correctly and used promptly. I'm talking about the real E-10 world of boats.

Are you saying that E-10 is bad gas? How is it any woese than MTBE laced gas, other than less pollution?
EFI motors can handle differences in gasoline quality much better than carburated motors, as there is a feedback system incorporated into all EFI systems. If the gas is burning rich or lean, the motor can adjust to correct it instead of a carburated motor just trying to feed a percentage of fuel to the air passing the venturi. EFI can also adjust for partially blocked orifices by increasing pulse width. Carburators just run lean if there is any blockage.
