Looking a 14 foot Smoker Craft with a new 4 stroke Yamaha 9.9 high thrust outboard. I was thinking that this would not be enough juice on the back, and figured maybe a 2 stroke 15hp Mercury would push it better or even a slightly bigger Yamaha... The boat is 14'5 with a 67inch beam and weighs 475lbs empty... Should I look at a slightly bigger motor, dont know how much juice the 9.9 has even though its high thrust - not familiar with this outboard... Not looking to set speed records but if I have a full load and two people I want to be able to get of my own way...

the T motors are geared and propped more for kicker motors and pontoons and such.
however with that much load you may be happy with it.
its IMPERATIVE to prop it to turn 5500 RPM with its normal load. these engines dont like overpropping at all.
the prop the engine was shipped with may or may not be correct for the hull its on.

Re: New Yamaha High Thrust 9.9 4 stroke Opinion

I have been looking at motors lately, I think with a boat that size, I think you might be happier w/at least a 15 hp, maybe even a 20 hp. My brotherr-in-law has a 14 smoker craft 14 and he runs a 9.9 Evinrude 2 stroke, he just uses it on small lakes but he wishes he had a 15 on it for more speed. The T9.9 would work for you like Rodbolt says, but it won't be a speed demon. I am seriously thinging of buying a 9.9 High Thrust my self, but strictly as a kicker motor. I currently run a 15 hp Honda and I think the T9.9 will do just as good a job for me. Just my 2 cents there.

I totally agree I have an old Starcraft 14 footer, basic row boat style boat that I use on small waters, that has a 1989 15hp Evinrude, she gets the job done... Dont think I want a 9.9 on a heavier boat, atleast 15.. Might be better looking into prices for a two stroke Yamaha 15, 20 or 25...

I saw some Yamaha 2 stroke engines on E-Bay last week, obviously much cheaper than 4 strokers.
