I installed a new water pump. Filled a barrel with water, cranked it up, motor won't pump water. Put ears and a hose on it, pumps water fine. Did I do something backwards? 25 hp Evinrude.

sounds like the impeller key fell out during assembly

What year?

Do you have the water pump fully submerged beneath the water line?

The muffs are simply 'force feeding' the cooling system.

Impeller key? Is that the tiny plastic piece that slips in?

Thanks for the help.

Correct, it locks the impeller to the drive shaft.

OK, I took the motor apart again and checked on the impeller key. It was in the proper position. I went ahead and took everything off and reinstalled it again. Again, the water does not pump when in a barrel but does on a hose.

Any idea what else it could be besides the impeller key?

as said before the pump is probably not deep enough in the barrel of water.

It is not pumping water on the hose either. The hose is "forcing" water through the engine which would happen if you didn't even have a water pump installed. Do you have the correct pump?
