New 'Volvo' Composite -OS- drives?

Howdy!

The local Volvo dealer that gave me a quote of nearly $20/k for a new 4.3/OSi package has got me thinkin' about this composite sterndrive unit...

I've done a little reading about this recent breakthrough from the Swede's. All sounds cool enough: less weight, less drag, better impact resistance etc..

But that don't spell out what is actually happening in the marketplace and service shops now that these things have been out there for four or five yrs..

I'm trollin' here for more opinions, both professional and from any of you guy's who are running them.

My mechanic (he's pro-Merc) got me a quote - through the same outfit funny enough - for $16,800/Cdn. for the Volvo OSi setup; his quote for the Merc 4.3/MPI/Alpha stands at just over $14/K. That's a fare spread.

I'm going to talk to the guy in Vancouver as well and find out what he could do the OSi for. Maybe I could narrow the gap some...

Thanks all for your time and trouble!

Cheers,
Terry

Hey Andy1Canada, how far are you from Seattle WA? Would you have a problem bringing a set up across the border?

Hey andy1canda, I have a line on a 4.3 FI repower set up (includes transom shield & SX outdrive). Brand new just under $11,000 (US). Dual prop slightly more. Let me know if interested.

Thanks for the reply.

One thing - t one on - that could be an issue (besides the exchange-rate on the dollar and possibility of getting hosed by customs at the border) is that new-product warranty's could be voided as soon as the unit crosses the border.

Terry-
The warranty shouldn't be a problem, You'll get the papaerwork with the unit and mail it to Volvo.
I wasn't sure what happens through customs when you take it across the border. That's why I was asking.
If you find out about customs and you're interested, let me know I'll give you the details. I bought my repower package from these guys back in 2000, a 5.7 carbed SX for about $9,200 delivered, everywhere else was about $14,000. Great shop, they do about a hundred repowers a year and generally have a few left over at the end of the season.
Good luck.
