My 1st posting, after a year of finding great tips regarding an AQ 125 in my old houseboat.

I'm looking at driving a several hrs to look at and hopefully buy a 19 ft bowrider with what is advertised as a new in 2007 AQ 151 C (i can only see the 151 C in the pic). Put away in 2008, it's practically new! If it's really had a new motor that recently, I think it's a pretty good deal. My '86 AQ 125B runs like a top, despite less than ideal care from it's prior owners.

I'm getting familiar with that type of motor, ...I assume it's similar?... but does anyone know much about them? Are they still selling new ones? wouldn't the guy have paid a small fortune to put it in his '87 boat?

I'm not a mechanic, (but I played one on the river last summer). Since the lakes are all frozen where I'm headed, I can only run it on the water muff things.

Any clues about what to look for to determine whether or not to buy would be a huge help. and if anyone can comment on the value of a boat not being used in salt water, vs one that has, that would be a bonus.

Thanks for this great forum!

Re: "New" V/P AQ 151 C?

I would imagine the "NEW" motor is rebuilt/remanufactured. Volvo Penta hasn't been using that engine since the early 90s. It's very similar to your 125 except it has a twin carb setup.

Fresh water boats are a much safer buy than a salt water boat for obvious reasons. The value/worth however is up to the individual. From what I've learned from this forum, I wouldn't buy a used salt water boat. Especially one thats 20+ years old. The salt is really hard on them. Even the closed cooling boats like your 125 and the 151.

Good luck and let us know what happens.:)

Thanks Capt Mello

That's valuable info all around.
I'll keep the boat shopping to the starboard side (headed south) of the 95.

Re: "New" V/P AQ 151 C?

Back Home!

After one pile of driving, trailer light and flat tire issues, we are home with our new craft. An Imperial 1840 Bow Rider. Very good shape, motor (and outdrive) looks and runs like brand new. This is one beamy, deep, solid boat. Should be perfect for the big river we live on.

We'll be ordering a bunch of stuff from iboats to dress it up etc.

Thanks again for the comments....perhaps a dumb question:

If anyone knows why there's this trough thing under the hinged padded cushion rear platform deal, I'd love to hear about it.

Re: "New" AQ 151 too good to be true? Overheating.

Re: "New" AQ 151 too good to be true? Overheating.

Too good to be true? Probably not, but a few complications.

My "new" 1988 had heated up on the trailer in the guy's yard in Maine, but cooled down when he added more water to the tank under the drive. The temp gauge dropped after that, so I figured it was okay. It was only half way up the inlet! He said it always runs a bit warm on the gauge, as does my AQ125 B.

He was worried he may have burned out the impeller, in fact, he said it had blown the exhaust hose/bellows apart just behind the engine just before I arrived. The first 2 inches was in his hand.... he had stretched it and put it back on, and the engine sounded perfect, and very newish. He came down another $400 below a great price, so hopefully it'll cover the parts needed.

I took it down to the river in the freezing weather Sunday. It heated up on the trailer, with the outdrive completely underwater, but then dropped back, as if the thermostat was slow opening at first. Went for a 30 second run to hear the engine under a load when the heat gauge spiked up and the hose blew apart again. Lots of smoke and noise. Very stupid, I know. Should have waited for the new impeller and bellows? to arrive. Hopefully no more damage than that. Shut down for a while, then ran another 30 seconds back on the trailer.

Read Don S's related info, downloaded an engine manual, and am looking for a manual for the 290 outdrive. Since the boats been sitting for 2 years, I'll do, or hire out, all the recommended maintenance.

Don's diagram indicates the exhaust part as # 18, I believe, (should have saved that page), but I'm still not sure what it's called. One search with the part # returned a hit for an exhaust hose.

Any clues on what else I may have damaged, and what to look out for, or the proper name of the rubber piece would be great.

Re: "New" V/P AQ 151 C?

Are you talking about #17 in this link?

http://www.volvopentastore.com/Induction-And-Exhaust-Manifold-Aq151c/dm/*******.779552622--**********.245746642--store_id.366--view_id.321257

Stupid is right. People seem to think that since a boat is a toy, it's all fun and games. Hopefully you didn't damage your engine by overheating it.

Anyway, without knowing the prior maintenance, I would just do every routine item so you know their condition.

Impeller, ujint bellows, tune up parts, fuel filter, etc. Basically follow the winterizing and summerizing threads in the adults only section. Those are pretty complete.

Let us know if you have any questions along the way. I would recommend doing the work yourself if you're comfortable doing it. Marine mechanics are very expensive.

Take your time, thats and old boat you've got there.:)

Thanks Capt Mello

This is the chart Don posted a few yrs ago, took me a while to find it. hopefully you can see the attachment.... It's # 18 that has come apart, and I have since found one using the part # on it and a helpful fellow who must have cross-referenced the #. $61.00 and another $61 for the impeller. Guess I am very lucky if I get off with that, + the routine maintenance. I'll have a mechanic friend come by and help me do that one and the 125 B, which can't get to a shop, since it's on a big honkin houseboat in the front yard. I am inclined to to it myself, but as you have seen, I'm a bit of an optimist, and therefore should be supervised at least the first time around. It will worth the investment in his time, I suspect.

Tim
