New Trailer tires

Hi just posting this because I'm amazed. I just ordered 4 new trailer tires from trailertiresandwheels.com and first they were only $33 a piece and I received them the next day! Now it probably helps that they shipped from near me, but for what I paid for 2 tires from Walmart I got all 4 delivered! Course I still will have to pay $10 ea to have themounted but I'm still $120 ahead!

You could save yourself $40 by learning to mount them yourself.

That's true, I could mount them myself, not sure if my air compressor has enough pressure to get that initial seal on the bead. Maybe I'll give it a whirl and see if it does. Can't hurt.

You don't need anything special to seat a trailer tire, even most car tires will easily seat without doing anything but putting air in the stem. Just make sure to lube the beads so that they pop on and do not over pressurize the tire when attempting to seat the beads. You can blow the tire right off the rim if you do.

I went to that site and compared to what I spent on my tires I just bought last summer. My dealer was way cheaper overall taking into account the mounting and balancing.

My tires are 225/75/15 Load Range D.

I mounted my own tires but couldn't get the beads to seat. Even my mechanic had a hard time with them.

Was the tire pressurizing but the bead wouldn't move, or couldn't get them to keep air?

Often, you need to put a strap around the tire and cinch it down to force the bead to the rim.

I concur with the OP...this is a great company to purchase from!

I did business with them in person at their shop, and I can tell you they do things the "old fashioned" way. Which completely gets my respect. The company consists of the father, son, and long time front desk lady. (Who knows her stuff too, by the way!)

I got to actually inspect/pick my tires out of their inventory so I could get matching batch numbers. I also was allowed to watch the son (tire installer/warehouse manager) mount and balance all five of my tires. I also got a new rim while I was there (at cost) because I had a bent rim (unknown to me at the time) and only through being allowed to watch him balance each tire did I see the wheel not turning true on the machine.

The father (owner) was very helpful and patient with me on the phone when I called with my initial questions; and invited me to come to the shop to save on shipping charges. I was very impressed with the entire experience and can testify to the integrity of these folks and their business practices.

My advice...whenever you can support a mom and pop operation...do it! There are still plenty of people around to keep Wal-Fart running like a finely rusted machine.

BTW, I saved $90 over the best deal I could get from any other online retailer on the total package...and that included my fuel expense to drive my truck round-trip! If I would have purchased at a local Tires & Turds store...the difference would have been nearly $180 to have the same work performed!

I buy my tires from a local tire dealer that owns 2 stores. He is almost always able to order the exact tires I want. Local tire dealers are the way to go if you ever have a problem with the tire.

I've done this with numerous tires, works great! The wider the tire, the easier it is.

I've only ever had to do that with big tires on wider rims, but no reason it wouldn't work for smaller tires too.

OP must have some tiiiiny tires (bias plys?). I had to put new tires on the 'new' trailer since the PO had passenger tires on it. Was $480 locally for 4 tires (radials) mounted/balanced and installed on the trailer. trailertiresandwheels price is $425 ($40 more w/o the sale pricing), then add another $15ea to mount/balance, then the labor for me to put them on. Not worth it at all.
It is worth having the resource to check prices against though!

While greasing my buddy bearings this morning I noticed cracks down in the tread. I figure the tires were 1991s like the boat and trailer. I had a hard time finding 10 plies around here and drove about 60 miles to pick them up when I did. The good news is that they only cost me $75 a tire with tax and all. I had them mounted at the local farm supply store for $15 each with valve stems and disposal and it was worth it to let them change them on the pontoon trailer. These new 20.5x8-10 tires are dated 2212 so I figure I got a good deal all the way around. They come with a warning that they have to be seated properly or they can blow up and cause death or serious injury while mounting them.
