i'm looking for help

i bought a brand new 3.5 tohatsu 4-stroke online. started 1st pull and ran at idle for 5 minutes then stalled. now it won't start. online agent not much help, local dealer backed up and can't look at it for 3 weeks.

the spark seems present but week. online sales guy said "maybe a faulty CDI unit" and tohatsu rep said "maybe oil got into carb and gummed it up"

any ideas?

thanks

Re: new tohatsu 3.5 4 stroke won't start

It could be anything, but.........Since the engine started and ran it is most likely a fuel system problem. I would start dumping out all of the fuel out of the tank....Throw it away and get new gas from a different station in a super clean container. Add the new gas to the tank, then open the drain screw on the carb and let a cup of fuel run through it. Put back in tht drain screw and start the engine. If it doesn't start find a different dealer or wait for the other one to get to it.

The oil sight gauge is like the one on a Honda 2 hp which means it sucks. It is possible that you could have too much oil in the engine and that will keep it from running too. The engines are test run at the factory before shipment and then have the oil drained. It is possible that there could have been some left over oil in the engine that, due to the engine being turned in every direction during shipment, wound up in the carb. If it did you would normally see some white colored goo around the mouth of the carb.

I doubt that you have a bad CDI or any other bad part on the engine. It is much more likely that it is fuel system related. Let me know your zip code and I will try to find someone who can help you locally.

Elvin
thanks for the input
the motor is at TIDEWATER marina, one of 2 tohatsu dealers in the region. at this point i am resigned to letting the motor sit at their shop for a few weeks more while i am out of town and in the meantime i'll use my 27 year old 2 hp johnson that still runs ok
thanks
