new to Yamaha, tnt interchange question

I helped a buddy buy a used boat, it came with a 1984 50 HP yamaha. we liked that cause i want him to have a good reliable motor . The motor doesnt have power TNT, ive been looking but they are hard to find... I found one on ebay but we hesitated because we were thinking of upgrading to more power. Then it sold. is there a chart that tells the years certain units will fit. Ive discovered that the first 8 symbols represent the same basic unit, and that the following symbols are for uprage and maybe improvement and then for color. is this totally true? and :anyone know of a TNT for sale for a 1984 50 hp yamaha? thanks bob

I would go for an aftermarket one instead.
changing out major parts on a very old motor would not be easy

My motor is very clean... i ordered a tnt today.... the cmc unit is almost $900 .

Decoding a Yamaha outboard part number. Say the part number is 63P-43800-00-00.

63P denotes the first Yamaha model it was used on. 63P is a four stroke F150.

43800 denotes that it is a power trim and tilt unit.

The first two numbers after the five digits denote a variant of the original part. The variant part number might or might not be interchangeable with the earlier part number(s).

The second two numbers after the five base digits equate to a colour code or a finish code. -4D being a gray colour for instance.

The parts catalogs show that the 1984 50 HP models did not come with trim and tilt. Power trim only.

The attach parts for power trim are more than likely different for trim and tilt.

Trim alone is fine.... i dont need the fast tilt at the end of the stroke...

I remember hearing about tilt only with no trim
you could not adjust the motor under way, it did not have the power to overcome the thrust of the prop pushing against the motor to move it to properly trim the motor

So they made a 50ETLJ IN 1986. AND IT CAME WITH THE 6H5-43840-04-EK TNT ASSY

if he can get what he ordered to fit on his motor.
maybe he ordered a T&T unit,
we do not even know what motor he has or what he ordered

I have the 50ELJ (NO TNT)

I do not even see a ELJ listed, but guessing it is an electric start, manual tilt.
so what T&T unit did you order to mount on that motor?
I would also guess, it will not bolt to a manual tilt motor

I ordered a unit off of a 92 40 hp model... #6h5-4380-05-4d

that is what I read it was when I did a search for that part number. nothing about a tilt and trim
