I just became the owner of an 1984 Evinrude 235HP. It's former life apparently was pampered with service and attention, low hours in lake use, and it performs as expected. I'll know more after using it on a very large and heavy CC hull. Eventually I will put a newer and more economical OB on the boat as I think that it is underpowered for the ocean use planned.
Having some skills in 2-cycle carburated OB's and able to finesse them back to health when cranky, any suggestions as to what I should take care of re. PM and quirks particular to this behemoth? It's been suggested that the first PM is to inspect/replace the rubber hosed diverters if engine checks-out OK otherwise.

Thanks in advance

New plugs/gear oil/water pump/t-stats and possibly new kits in the carbs. One of the first things is to run it and find out the rpms at wide open throttle. Also do a compression check and decarb.

Yes, the receipts show that work has been done. I replace impeller and t-stats every season, lower unit oil checked 2-3 each season. I have cases of SeaFoam around. I have not bought a Clymer book or searched out factory manuals. What psi range is spec'ed? This motor type must have changed drastically at some point. Have not found anyone pining away for them. They must have reps for some good, some bad traits.

There are no specs for compression. The important point is that all cylinders be within 10% of each other. Generally (I don't know your motor) compression above 100 psi is OK.
