Thanks for the response UU. The engine has a oil container that I am led to believe is for oil injection, so I assume that the ratio will automatically be set.

Can you confirm that this is a 1999 model, from the serial number?

And if so, I have seen a site that lists Suzuki 9.9 as being a 4 stroke in that year - which is confusing to me!!

While I am waiting for the delivery of the manual, are there any running/safety tips that should be born in mind to keep a healthy engine?

I recently acquired a Suzuki DT 9.9 C engine serial number 00994-908658. From a reply previously posted I asusme this is a 1999 model?

What octane fuel should be used, & leaded or unleaded?

What oil should be used?

Are there any user instructions available for such a machine?

cheers

John

Re: New to these engines

Manuals can be found here

Being a 2-stroke your fuel concern should be unleaded 87 oct min. and any TWC-3 certified oil. Do NOT use ordinary 2-stroke oil (or any oil designed for other specific 2-stroke engines) as marine use/conditions calls for the TWC standard, '3' being the latest generation.

Although specs changes over time, I guess these should cover your model (cut from another Internet site):

Leg length
-S:15"
-L:20"
Startsystem
-Manual
Fuelsystem
-Carburettor
Cylinders
-2
Displacement cm3
-284
Bore / stroke mm
-59x52
Power kw (HP)
-7.3(9.9)
Max recommended rpm at WOT
-4,500-5,500
Steering
-Tiller/Remote (optional)
Choke
-Manual
Ignitionsystem
-SUZUKI P.E.I
Generator
-12V 80W or 30W
Trim/Tilt
-Manual
Gas/oil ratio
-100:1
Gear ratio
-12:23(1.92)
Exhaust
-Through prop hub
Prop protection
-Rubber hub
Prop pitch
-7" to 11"

In the list, oil ratio is stated as 100:1 which I'd suggest you investigate further before using it - 50:1 is more common and ofcourse you wouldn't dream of running it on ½ the proper oil amount

Re: New to these engines

The model ID 'DT' says Two stroke whilst 'DF' is Four stroke.

The 9.9 comes in plenty versions and I think it is safe to say the oil tank in yours is for an auto-blend system.

When you start it you'll see a white smoke (especially when cold) which is a sign of oil in the gas. If you see no smoke at all, the oiling system needs cheking ASAP. I haven't heard of any weak points in Suzis' oil mix'er though.

It takes nothing more than normal care to use an outboard: When starting keep rpm at idle or just above for approx one minute. Allow it to idle for a short while before engaging gears (which should always be done in one, firm but gentle movement). If your prop is right, you won't be able to turn it at too high rpm even at full throttle (your prop is right if it runs within rec. rpm range at WOT).

The manual will state best practises for use etc., but one point so focus on is that you must supply plenty cooling water whenever starting the motor. Either by muffs, running it in a barrel or, ofcourse, at sea. It should show a tell tale to let you know water is pumped around inside the water jacket - if not, the water pump impeller needs replacement. On muffs or in barrel no more than 1500 rpm (high idle) is advisable.

Other than that you can run it, at least until you get the manual.

Re: New to these engines

My local dealer has let me down in the supply of a manual.

In the list of the manuals that I was directed to above, the choice is confusing. My engine cover has 'sail' printed across it, but the Clymer manual, only shows the sail model for up to 1991, but I think my model is 199, from the serila number. I am now not sure which manual I should be ordering. The Engine tag has the model as DT9.9C.

Any suggestions?

I'd suggest you mail your make & model info to the manual's dept. They should be able to help.

Another source is maxrules.com
