Hi Everybody ! I just purchased this week an old Johnson 1966 6HP (CD-23E) that is clean ans starts with no more than 3 pullouts !!! It is in a very good condition and the previous owners took care of it. It come with a little 14' fishing boot with its trailer. The funny thing is that my grand father had one identical when I was younger (same year and model) so it remember me good stories from my childness.

Now the serious things ! I want to make the maintenance myself and I'm wondering if this model is exactly the same than the evinrude 1966 6HP (model 6602) with the same pieces number ? I found some "repair manual" on the net for the evinrude but since I have the johnson version, I'm not sure if I can buy it.

Thanks for your help and please, be leniant with my english, french is my native language.

Re: New to the forum

Here is some pictures of the beast I took tonight ! :D

As you can see, it is in a nice and clean condition for its age.

I'll change the gear oil (I already did this operation in another motor) and check for the compression also. Is there a reason why you recommand me to change the water pump kit ? If it is not broken, why fix it ? Is it something that broke often and need to be replace frequently ?

Thanks a lot for you advices ! I don't have many messages yet in this forum but I already read a lot and learn many thing here ! Glad to found you !

Ooof the ultimate insult to a french person, esti tabernac! (calling a french person a `frog`) at least here in Ottawa it is!

Replace the pump if it`s in an unknown condition, it`s the only cooling provided to the motor, no pump=siezed powerhead.

Re: New to the forum

when you dont know the history its a safe thing to do, I guess it should be changed every few years.
its reality cheap, and without a good one you will be quickly looking for a new motor

Re: New to the forum

I did a compression test and both cylinder have 70 psi. Is it low for a 2 strokes motor ? Do I need to make a decarb with Seafoam ?

I did the compression test with the other spark plug in place. Is it the correct way to do this test ?

Both plugs out and grounded. 4 or 5 pulls. If within 10% of each other is good. Do the de-carb anyway, it won't hurt anything, and might get rid of insects.

Do you know that Frog nickname for french canadian came from the WWII. They call us Frog since WWII for "FRench OriGin".

Re: New to the forum

This afternoon, I did the compression test with a compression tester I borough to a shop of little motor like lawn mower and snow blower. It gaves me the 70psi on each cylinder.

This night, I bought a new compression tester and made the same test than this after noon. I remove only the spark plug of the cylinder I want to test. It gave me 90 psi on both cylinder. I did also another compression test but this time, I remove both spark plugs and it gave me also 90 psi on each cylinder so I don't think that removing all spark plugs will change the reading.

After that, I put the feet of the motor on water and start the motor. It runs smoothly. The water pump is working, I see the water exiting the hole on the middle of the feet.

I'm doing a Seafoam cleaning now. It will clean the motor and carburator and I'll test another time the compression after the seafoam.

Thanks all for your help, I appreciate your support (and your joke about my
FRench OriGin !!! :D:D:D)
