New to Ocean Fishing

I live in Whittier, Ca. I have launched at Alamitos launch in Long Beach a few times. I want to go over to Catalina soon. However I want to get more experience fishing around LB/LA harbor first. Is there anyone out there who can give me tips on where to catch fish, what type of rig to buy (not to expensive)One that will be good as an all around combo and what type of bait to use on halibit, Sea Bass, etc. Where can I get info on reading material on fishing this area.

you dind't hear this from me.... but for halibut.... I hav efound that err.... Trout make very nice bait..... <br /><br />pretty much all other bottom fish, use a jig, bit ol rubber worm..... salmon? I use a flasher and oh I forgot what that octopus looking thing is with a piece of herring, in the river I troll with a plug cut hering.....
