Hello all we are a military family new to warner robins,GA area. i am looking for great places to take the kids out and have a good time on the water.....lakes or rivers. We enjoy fishing and just joy riding in our 15' trihull. i would like to stay as close to home (warner robins) as possible for obvious reasons. (gas, time, etc.) Can anyone give me some suggestions of where to go here. oh yeah and free launching is always nice.
thanks,

I don't know much about the lakes but where you are you will have to go North East to the Millidgeville area to Lake Sinclair, or West to the Columbus area, there are several lakes there. You moved to a place with no water. You are about 3 hours from the coastal waters of Ga., I16 to Savannah.

I agree with nlain, you landed in an area of the state with little boating options. You can do a search on Flint River and the Ocmulgee River as I beleive that are closer to you than the lakes. Lake Sinclair and West Point lake are good options, just further away...

There is also Jackson Lake up the Ocmulgee River. Do a search on it and figure out haow far away from you it is...

just moved to Macon, GA and have been researching for nearby waters as well. From Warner Robbins you are very close to Lake Tobesofkee, just up 475 bypass a little ways. I have heard that it is a very nice recreational lake but can get busy during the summer. I used google earth to check it out and find ramps. I plan on going and putting my boat in it for the first time this weekend to fish. Other than that, i think Lake Sinclair and Lake Oconee NE of us is the next closest thing, but I have heard worth the trip, especially for bass fishing.

From Warner Robins you are probably about equidistant from Tobesofkee and Lake Blackshear. There is a nice ramp at GA. Veterans State Park. Take I-75 South to the US 280/Cordele Exit and then travel about 10 miles west to the park entrance/lake. The end of the lake south of the 280 bridge is nice. You will need to watch for a few stumps on the west (north) side, but they are either marked or visible. North of the bridge, be sure to stay in the channel markers unless you go out trolling for fish...it's stumpy. Skiing is good in the river channel north of the lake and there are several river camps as well as the Lake Blackshear Resort marina that you can pull in for food, gas, and beverages. We were skiing without wetsuits in early October this year and the water warms up in early April. It can get a bit busy on the weekends in the summer, but what lake isn't?

Re: New to middle Georgia with some boating questions

SCAMOOT,

Welcome to Middle Georgia! I too am a retired military guy and live near the base. There are several boating lakes within a resonable distance of WR. As previously mentioned, Lake Tobesofkee is just west of I-475 at exit 5, about 30-40 minutes from the base. Tobesofkee is a nice baoting, skiing and fishing lake but is relatively small compared to other area lakes and can be busy and crowded but it is fun.

I prefer Lake Sinclair and can be up there in about 1 hr from the base. Twin Bridges marina is a bit closer than Milledgeville and I believe the launch ramp is free. Sinclair is much larger than Tobesofkee and is closer and deeper than Blackshear.

Enjoy the lakes and the area, it's a great place to live and in a week or so the daytime temps will be back in the mid 60's.

I grew up going to Sinclair every weekend. Little river is on the western side, I grew up on the north end Oconee River section but played all over. you should be able to get to a ramp in about an hour from Warner Robbins. Jackson Lake would probably be reachable in less than 1.5 hrs. Jackson is smaller and is one of the oldest lakes in the state. Both are Ga Power lakes.

I'm also in WR, retired from the AF, and have a runabout and cruiser. Take Tobesofkee is closest, and you knew that. $3 per person and $3 for the boat to launch out of Claystone Park. Good ramp, 6 lanes.

If you just want to stick it in to test out ofter working on it, ot as a confidence check, you can use Houston Lake. South towards Perry on Houston Lake Rd. Free, but idle only. Most of the lake is 7 - 10 feet deep.

Lake Oconee - Absolutely beautiful. You can launch from most marinas for a few buck, or camp and use the ramp for free. Not sure what the day rate is for the ramp. Watchout for 100 mph bass boats coming out of the cove.

Blackshear - Gators, but nobody has been eaten there. Great little cafe/bar/beach at Veteran's Park. Nice lodge too. And live bands in weekends during the summer.

Sinclair - Very popular, I have never been. much the same as Oconee, but closer to Atlanta, so more people use it.

Eglin AFB in Ft Walton has a great marina you can use. 5 hour drive. Puts you behind the island, but you can get out into the gulf.

Savannah/Tybee Island. Gets you into the river. Easy to get lost, go far and run out of fuel, get swept out to sea. Plan carefully. GPS, Radio, kicker.

Ocmulgee River - Ramps in Macon on Spring street, and on Hwy 96. STAY AWAY!!! STAY AWAY!!! Or invest heavily in props and lower units. You can make a fortune in what you will be selling to yourself.

See you at the lake!

Check out Lake Seminole and Lake Eufala. Both are beautiful and have access to the Gulf. Both about three hours from Warner Robbins (Eufala may be closer)
