Hello All
I have tooled around these forums for a few years now, but have only ever wrenched on Johnson/Evinrude motors. I have just recently acquired a 2004 Mercury 115 HP outboard, model 115ELPT4S, and was hoping for a little guidance. The motor starts and idles great. The problem is at speed, its popping out of gear. If I take the throttle back to neutral, then roll it back on, it will re-engage. I don't yet have an OEM manual for this motor, but was wondering if I am looking at worn gears, or a worn clutch, or would this behavior point to another problem. If it is a worn clutch, is this something I can replace myself (I've done a lower unit re-seal on a couple of older Johnson motors), and are there any special tools I am going to need to accomplish this. Any help/advice/guidance would be greatly appreciated.
