I have just purchased a 1968 International 23' cuddy cabin, with an electric shift OMC 225.

Engine is apart, (Chevy 350) which is no problem for me, and the outdrive seems to be in decent shape for the age. Oil was clean when I drained it.

Unknown if shift coils work. Was working 3 years ago.

I plan on cleaning up and servicing the whole drive, to get it in the water by next spring.

Are there any "quirks" I should look out for or change parts on?

I have a new transom seal in the bag that came with it, other than that, would a seal kit be in order?

I would re-seal it since it's apart and you have all winter to do it.

Buy a manual first!

I am getting a SELOC manual.

Are there any other brands of manuals? Have not seen them if there are.

Well, got it all apart.

Upper Gearcase- Good, tight, just reasealing it when I get the $$ for a kit.
Lower Gearcase-Same as above and the shift coils check out good.
Water pump-Trashed
Water pump shaft- Worn spline, but servicable. Will replace if I can find one.

Here is the only BIG problem I have found-
On the intermediate housing, the flanges where the exhaust comes is in are rotted off. Previous owners had made a sleeve and JB weld repair to it, but it needs to be fixed again.

Are there any "kits" out there with new flanges that can be welded on?

I'm thinking I have 3 options
1-Find a way to fix it
2-Find a replacement case that is not rotted
3-Plug off exhaust below where the ball gear shaft comes out, and install thru the hull exhaust.

Any other ideas?

As to the engine, looks fine, will put new rings, rods, mains, oil pump, timing set and lifters in.

Seems to me like your choices are limited. Look for a new housing first. Through hull exhaust only as the last option.

Gee- those intermediate cases are fairly plentiful... I just put one (like brand new) in the scrap bin - should I go dig it out? $100 will prob get it to your door. I didn't mark the trunnion caps L and R when I took them off- you could probably figure it out tho'
email me hystat@hotmail.com

I have an electric shift OMC as well that was recently rebuilt. One thing you need to watch out for is when running with the garden hose make sure you don't use too much pressure.

I have found that I routinely get water in my upper unit after doing this and have done quite a few lube changes in the upper.

Make sure you check the upper gear lube after running on the hose before taking it out for any distance.
