Hi folks. I posted a few weeks ago about a possible older motorboat I wanted to get.. and I got it.

The seller thinks it is a 1963 18' Starcraft, with a '69 Evinrude 75hp.. and I got an '83 trailer with it.

The outboard motor on it is definately a V4, and it has 2 carbs. There is an ID plate to the left of the motor
(left looking at it from behind the boat).. it is hard to read, but I think the model is "V4AL 15E". It also says
that it is rated for 75hp. someone said they didn't make a 75hp in '69, so maybe it is a '63 era engine, maybe
overhauled?

The seller said he hadn't cranked the engine in 2 years. This is my first boat. I plan on flushing the oil, checking
the ignition parts, wipe out the carbs, put some oil in the cylinders, and try to crank it up. Of course I'll need to
buy a marine battery for that ..

Any help would be appreciated! I got a repair book along with it, so that should help some. Thanks

Mark

Hi mellocj
The #s you posted are johnson #s. They are for a 1962-63 75hp johnson. So this leads me to think that there has been some switching going on. This is not unusual for a motor of that vintage. It can how ever be a little confusing. There is an aluminium welch plug (about the size of a quarter) on the block. Those #s will help id the power head.

I couldn't find the welch plug, and I couldn't find it in any diagrams in my book? Where is it? The started is on the starboard side, is it near that?

I saw a number on the port side of the engine, not sure if it is a model # "3U 8822" then below it is "1"

thanks.

Re: new-to-me old boat! need to ID engine

Hey I was looking about a week ago to find the year of my motor and one boating bud told me and the other refered me here. I think the language is german or dutch im not sure but it dosent take a rocket scientist to use the #'s they post. This reference will take you right to the page you need. of course this is assuming you have the right model #. Try it anyway, with the # you have. But if you have Alcan helping you, well he is the man! he has helped me so much as well. Hope this helps, Denny {http://www.marinshopen.se/index.htm} this is not a link, just put it in your browser and hit go

Hi mellocj
Look on the top of the port side cylender. If you don't see it, you should be able to see where it is supposed to be.
Thanks Guys for the complement, but the reality is, I am just an old man having fun learning to work my computer.

Hello mellocj!

"V4AL 15E" is a 1962-63 75 HP Johnson. (1962-63 V4A-V4AL-14 V4A-V4AL-15) as alcan already told you.
You will find it here:
http://mitglied.lycos.de/old_omc/
Johnson serial numbers:
http://mitglied.lycos.de/old_omc/johnson.html

You can also find pictures of 1964 Johnson 75 HP:
http://mitglied.lycos.de/old_omc/j_1964/john_1964.html
...or a 1960 Johnson 75 HP:
http://mitglied.lycos.de/old_omc/j_1960/john_1960.html
There is no pictures of the 1962-63 model.

Dennyps
http://www.marinshopen.se/guide/guide.htm is a swedish page and the language is swedish too. German or dutch...
Ok, I'll get over it. ;)

/Bear

Is the transom plate the same color as the foot of the motor. if not someone might have swapped the plate with a johnson. ;)

on top of the port side cylinders I found a round thing about the size of a quarter. It wasn't a removable plug, but more like just a circle embossed on the top. didn't see any markings in it, after cleaning it out.

The cover of the motor fits with it being an early 75hp Johnson. It says "Super Sea Horse" and "electromatic". I guess for now, since I can't find any model number on the welch plug of the engine, I will just have to assume it is a ~63 75hp Johnson.

thanks for the help guys.

As I understand it, OMC sold the publication rights for outboard manuals prior to 1980 to Ken Cook Co. www.kencook.com. They have lists of outboard model numbers, horsepowers, and years for johnson and evinrude outboards. If you are thinking of buying a manual for your motor they would probably be able to pull out a manual and help you identify it.

ND Boater
