New to me motor. Weak water stream on muffs?! '95, 225 Johnson

1995 OceanRunner 225 that hasn't run for 2 years. How strong should it pee on muffs? After 30-40 secs I'm only seeing spitting/dribble, not a steady stream like I'm familiar with on the '98 OceanRunner 150 I just sold.

I replaced the impeller. Everything looked good going back together. I used gasket sealer according to the manual.

It has one of those quick-connects for flushing. Does that affect it in any way?

Any ideas?

I just got everything done for the re-start. It hasn't been in the water yet. My 150 peed strong on the same muffs, so I'm wondering.

How long can I run it without water circulation? A minute? Maybe if I ran it longer than 30-40 secs I might get a stream, but I don't know how long is too long without cooling.

It sometimes takes those 225's a little longer to start peeing when on the flusher.

Boobie.....when you say "flusher" are you talking about the upper quik-connect, or the muffs? Without knowing any better, I thought if the motor is running you have to use the muffs to get water straight into the water pump. How would water get to the water pump from the quik-connect up top?

The upper quick disconnect dosent need the motor going, its nice for those neighbours.
I dont think any motor would take 30 seconds.
What sort of muffs are you using, your description of it spitting is normally a bad sign.
Have you checked the tell tale isnt clogged, i suspect its not clogged

Yes and you are right the motor needs it on muffs if you a going to run it, on the upper quick connect only and with the motor running you will burn through the impeller.
Id suggest either dropping it in and seeing if your muffs arent up to the task of running your bigger motor on.
Have you the double sided inlet type?

I dropped it in and same thing......a spray pattern, not a stream. But then back in the drive I took a close look (for mud-dauber wasps or some other obstruction). It turns out that the tattletale is only a small hole in the side of the quik-connect flusher. Upon exit from this hole, the water can only smash into the side of the indent that holds the flusher. So there is no way for a single stream to exist. It has to be a spray.

I'm not very experienced with OB's, and I've never read/heard about a pee/spray pattern like this. But it appears engineered that way. Am I correct?

I cant answer that sorry but a spray pattern which is obstructed by smashing into the side of a motor doesnt seem useful as a tell tale to me especially when you are at speed in a spray swell.
I look forward to hearing the answer too

I believe I have the answer. By adding a couple layers of teflon tape I was able to reposition the quik-connect so that the hole is now facing down and slightly to the side. Now I have a decent stream and I'm real glad I didn't tear back into the water pump.

Thats an economical fix, sounds good.
For future reference how long does it take for this spray to start?
cheers

Until I fire it up again I can't answer definitively, but it's in the 10-20 sec range. It actually turns out that there was an o-ring missing where the quik-connect threads bottom out. I didn't need the teflon tape after all. The o-ring allowed me to tighten to the point where I could direct the hole where I wanted it. Too far and the stream crashes against the housing......that's what was going on.
