New to me boat?

I posted this in the sailing section but got no responses. So I will try it here.

A few years ago I used to sail. Now I have moved to a place where I can actually use a sail boat again. For quite some time I was land locked and didn't have access to real water for a sail boat. Now I am thinking of getting back into it again, but boats have changed a little since I used to sail. What do I look for in a used sail boat? How will I know if it is a good price or not?

I currently have a power boat. This will be in addition to the motored variety.

Good luck brother, can't help you there as I only like CC boats, I am a big fisherman, so sailboats are not for me. Hopefully someone jumps in here and gives you some pointers.

Most of that depends on price and type of sailboat. In a lot of respects, they're like buying a power boat (motor inspection, chk hull for holes, deck for soft spots, etc.). But, add in inspection of the sails, the mast/boom, standing rigging, running rigging and rudder. Sailboats spend more time living ini the water so check for blisters, etc. As for value look at a bunch and you'll get a feel for your market.

What kinda' water are you going to be sailing on, and how big of a boat? On a cat or a 15' sloop, you'll need to look over the hull and rigging - but on a 24' sloop you've got a keel and an inboard to deal with too. 45' schooner doesn't sound bad :)

I will be using it on the ocean, specifically Conception Bay in Newfoundland. In short-the North Atlantic. Can get rough some days, but always has wind, makes for good sailing when the wind calms down a bit.

That's a little outta' my league, 24' is a big sailboat for me - and not something I know a lot about. I'm used to the little ones.

You're gonna' want something minimum of 24' for going off shore, and really I think I would be having it surveyed.
