I'm picking up a 14' skeecraft with a 40hp 69 johnson on it. Motor runs strong but just lost the water pump while testing in the barrel , I'll be replacing the water pump shortly. What other service should I perform while I'm at it. I'm planning on the pump kit, plugs, and possibly a de-carb.

I have a 85 30hp merc available as well that is impeccable, would you

a. service the Johnson and keep it as backup
b. Service the Merc and keep it at the ready and use the Johnson til it dies (assuming it runs good)

I will be in some remote areas and plan to carry a backup 6-10hp just in case.

I've also never worked on an outboard, I'm not sure if that matters or not.

One more thing. Where can I get the best manual and pump kit?

I had that exact same motor. It would not circulate water in a barrel unless you had the water level up HIGH....right up to the exhaust outlet. It scared the crap out of me doing that. Take it to the lake and try it before you think the pump is bad. Mine was electric shift. That thing was incredibly powerful but not particularly fast. I finally got rid of it. The electric shift was really smooth, but it never idled well except when it was cold. I also had it on what we call a "Hawg trough" that had stick steering which I also don't like. Anyway, just a tip on the water pump, your's may be bad but this was my experience with it.
