Hey, I just bought a new to me boat. Can’t say I’m too familiar with this engine, wondering if anyone has a list of maintenance items that should be addressed before I take this boat out. The carb is going to be rebuilt (I think that’s the biggest issue with it not running perfectly. I am also considering upgrading to an electronic ignition, but for now just going to make sure the system is in working condition (caps, wires and plugs appear to be new-ish).

simply service the points. 99% of points ignition problems is because people do not understand how to adjust dwell or its a carb issue. there are stickies in the DIY link at top of the forums on points ignition.

properly adjusted points will work exactly like electronic ignition. the advantage of points is you can service them while at sea if there is a problem. the advantage of electronic ignition is that timing remains constant for years. however if you file/adjust your points every spring, a set of points will last almost 20 years on a boat.
