Im looking at a 1988 Sun Runner that has a Merc ib/ob. The owner claims it has water in the oil. What else could it be other than a head gasket? I know in automotive that is most common but I am aware there is more to the marine engines. I believe ir is a 3.0 Merc. with alpha 1 outdrive.

Thanks in advance for your help.

How much water are we talking about? Thimble full or way over the full mark.
Most common in a marine engine is a cracked block. Happens all the time when it isn't winterized properly.
It is SELDOM a head gasket on a marine engine that gets water in the oil.
