ive always had and worked out boards now i started a new prodject with i/o.this boat sat since 97<br /><br />its a20 ft renken cuddy. hin # is rbmgm328m81l if im reading it correctly its a 1981.<br />the stern drive has 3 labels 1st says mercruiser 485,the2nd says 5909531, the third one says 5808353 and 1.84r(this one is top center close to transom.<br />transom mount has sticker with 88301s on it<br />now to the motor. top of valve cover says mecruiser 485 then there is a label that says<br />model #mcm 485<br />displacement 224cid<br />rated hp 185<br />rotation ccw<br />serial #5913494<br />it also has a sticker that says sern drive s#5808353and transom plate s#5909831<br /><br />any info you could give mewould be helfull<br />such as year of motor<br />known problems<br />how fast will this hp push this boat<br />(on the top of the head is stamped ford)so is it a ford?<br />how much should it cost to overhaul motor by a mechanic or if i did it myself(i have rebuild truck motor)<br />what should i replace in or on the stern drive?

Don't even think of replacing a marinized engine with a truck engine. Even if it seems like the exact same thing, it isn't, and it won't last in a boat. There are many threads here explaining the differences.

Icwebpeople<br />If your motor is a 224 CID then it is a 3.7L.<br />Is this motor 4 Cylinders or 6??<br />As far as speed need wieght and hull type to estimate. Is it a deep V, Modified V, or Flat bottom?? How much does it wiegh with fuel, people and gear??

i meant i have rebuilt truck engines so i do have the skill to rebuild this mercruiser if its worth it.

icwebpeople,<br /><br />That's great you were able to find all of those numbers.<br /><br />Your boat is in fact a 1981.<br /><br />The engine (I believe) is a four cylinder 3.7L. It is niether a 2.5 or 3.0. It's a different animal altogether.<br /><br />The engine was a Mercury exclusive design. It mates a stock Ford 460 cid. head with a Merc. designed aluminum block. The pistons/rods are also stock Ford 460.<br /><br />The engine uses a closed cooling system.<br /><br />There has been much discussion on this board regarding these engines of late.<br /><br />Do a search using the keywords: Merc 470, Merc 485.

yes it is a 224 cid.<br />the label says max weight is 1850 lbs with gear fuel and motor.<br />boat is a renken model # 2095 deep v.<br /><br />any one know the cost of a rebuild kit, harmonick balancer, pullys, gasket kit for the motor?<br /><br />the stern drive need gasket kit and the boot that goes over the u joints and shaft.<br /><br />if any one has partslet me know.<br /><br />unfortionatley the last guy was going to rebuild engine and took off all external parts and connections. still cheching to see what is missing. ill know more when i get a manual and parts book.

any one have any info on the sterndrive?<br />it says its a mod 485 also.<br />is it an alpha 1?<br />1st or 2nd GEN.?<br /> COST TO REBOULD IT WITH SEALS AND DOES IT HAVE A IMPELLER?<br /><br />YOU SAID MOTOR HAS A CLOSED COOLING SYSTEM , WHAT EXAXTLY DOES THAT MEAN? I SEARCHED OTHER POSTS AND I AN WONDERING WHY THERE IS SUCH A WIDE RANGE IN HORSE POWER LISTED FOR THIS MOTOR? MINE SAYS 185 HP AND IT HAS NOT BEEN MODIFIED BY ANYONE AND I SEE SOME SAY MORE HP AND ALOT WITH LESS.

any one who is interested in parts or the whole boat and motor, stern drive. ( no trailer or title for boat) please contact me at <br /><br />icwebpeople@aol.com<br /><br />i live in md.<br /><br />im going to stick with outboards they seem to be less of a pain in my ---.<br /><br />ill take $700 for the whole lot.<br />the parts that are missing or need new are<br />balancer,pullys,rebuild top end, new gasget kit,sarter and carb will need rebuilt.<br />trim unit and parts are included if you take the boat too.<br />if you want the trailer ill sell it for $600<br />its a highlander and ill put new hubs,rims,tires on it and mahe sure the lights work on it. trailer will come with a home made title or a kit trailer title.

ic,<br /> Don't be turned off to I/Os just because the 1st one you found was the Dreaded 470......<br />Any of the Chevy based motors are the way to Go...
