hey, I am new here, but before joining I picked the brains of alot of these forums and have found alot of great help. I am new to boating, and recently purchased a 62 crestliner arabian deluxe on the original gater trailer, that was found in a barn in upstate ny (it had been there quite some time). It has the 40 hp johnson super sea horse electramatic(rkl-24). Upon preliminary checks the lower coils seem to read a resistance of 7 to 7.5 and everything turns freely. I currently am rebuilding the carb and fuel pump, also doing points, condensor, plugs, waterpump, thermostat and most other small maintanence stuff.

My question is general for now, What are the dos and don'ts of this particular setup, and what should i look for to diagnose any problems.

Any help is greatly appreciated to try to make my first boating experience a good one.
thanks,

1. Use the correct lower unit oil. It is different from the standard 90W oil. Called type C or OMC Premium blend.

2. Make sure the lower end doesn't leak. Water in the gear oil will kill it.

3. Don't break the switches in the control box. They are not available

4. If you drop the lower end to change the impeller, make sure to disconnect the two shift wires first. Break those wires and you'll be hatin life.

5. Stay away from salt water.

The main thing to to check the oil occasionally for water intrusion, and to make sure no fishing line is wrapped around the prop shaft. If water is getting into the gearcase, then the oil will turn milky and tan, instead of clear. You can't really check a seal; either it works to keep the water out or it doesn't.

Before spending a bunch of money on the motor, I would first check compression. If it hasn't got decent compression, you're wasting your money on all the other parts.
