I'm almost completely new to boating. I just picked up a 1989 Forrester 157 Phantom in solid hull but rough cosmetic condition, with a Johnson 70EL760 motor. The previous owner had no maintenance records. All I was told was that they had started the engine each year to make sure it was in working condition. This year they could start it, but it would not stay running. Start, run for a moment, stop. Start, run for a moment, stop. I have not attempted to start the motor since I purchased the boat, and would like advice on what to check/inspect before attempting a start, and how to check/inspect it. I will probably end up needing to purchase the owner's and service manuals. I suppose I need a checklist of sorts. I do have the "earmuffs" to attach a water hose for test runs. The batter is present, but currently not installed. It appears to be simple enough to connect, though.

Any and all advice welcome! By the way, I picked everything up, including the trailer, for $600.00. Decent deal?

The model number was copied directly from the transom clamp plate. This is the only photo I have to post of the motor for now.
