New tires warped?

Hey everyone I just posted a few days ago about putting larger tires on my boat trailer, well I mounted the tires on after new bearings and one of the tires has a wobble to it, it hits a certain spot and its like the rim has a bend in it. Only in one spot.

Is this due to bearing installation or due to a bad wheel?

I put the older smaller tire on it, and did not notice a wobble but had a touch of up and down instead of side to side like the new tire.

Do these smaller (4.80x8 and 5.80x8) tires just has some imperfections in general? Should I worry about it or not?

I am pretty sure I got the bearings races seated correctly.

Thanks,

-John

Sounds like a bent axle or spindle to me, John.

Try the wheel from the other side.

Good luck. :)

It could the bearings or the tires/wheels.

Remove the wheels and mount a pencil as close as you can to the hub(s). Spin them and see if you see any wobble in the hubs. Of you do, check your hub tightness/bearing installation.

If not, it's probably wheels/tires. You can do the pencil trick on those too. Check the rims, then the tires.

You mentioned, before, you were going to use spacers. That could be your problem. Getting the lug torque correct with spacers can be tricky.

Re: New tires warped?

Thanks guys.

This was without spacers, turns out I didnt need to use any after all.

I did the pencil trick with the wheel attached and there is a big difference, it seems like the rim is bent, or tire is warped.

I didnt do it with the hub yet but I will.

The old tires didnt wobble just moved up and down slightly, which might be just an illusion due to dirt and such on the wheel.

So I will check the other wheel and swap and see what happens, but I would assume that the old tire would wobble just like the new tire if something was messed up. I hope its just a bad Carlisle tire from wal-mart :)

If it's a Carlisle and isn't bad, it soon will be. I had bad luck with all 5 Carlisles. There are also several posts on several boards about Carlisle horror stories. Good luck.

Well I just checked the hub and it spins true, I did the pencil test DJ spoke of. When I do it with the wheel on it has a definite warp to it.

I checked the other side and it doesnt have these problems at all. Must just be a bad tire :) Off to wal*mart I go....

Well, wal*mart doesnt have those tires anymore they are sold out, and wont have more for 3+ weeks.

I noticed my snowmobile trailer has Carisle tires on it, and boy they have been great. We have put thosands of miles on that trailer in horrible conditions (off road logging roads with tons of snow ice on them, to straight summer highway travel) never any problems or major treadwear at all, They still look pretty darn good.
They are 5.70x8 as well.
-John

Johnshan1,

I am not one to bash a particular brand. Many folks are not fans of Carlisle. Some are.

Be aware that heat is what kills tires. I'm sure it will work fine until you get a replacement.

I'm just curious, does the tire from the sled trailer run true?

Re: New tires warped?

Thats a good question DJ, I might have to go check! I also really dont have much to say about the Carisle brand besides what I said regarding the sled trailer, I might just be lucky,

On another note, I went to an auto store today and bought another tire, same size, but I get home to discover there is a 1" difference in the 2 tires!!!!

Can I ever win?

I still have a little problem though, if I hold a pencil at the top of the wheel and rotate the wheel it goes up and down during its rotation, so I guess that means a bent spindle? Its slight but noticable, but now no wobble :)

No Way Possible.........
The Spindle doesn't Turn....
It'll cause Alignment Problems... But, No Way it can cause a Wobble, or Bobble........
Wheel,
Hub,
or Tire....
