New tires for Suburban - Recommendations

I've got a 2004 Suburban with the 17" rims. It currently has the Bridgestone dueller HT tires. I have not really been thrilled with these tires. I don't think they wore well, were noisy fairly early on, and didn't really handle water well.

I had a set of the Dueller HL's on my expedition that I thought did very well. Nice quiet ride and they lasted well into the 65K+ range. They wer particularly good with water, but I was very pleased otherwise.

Any recommendations on what would be good? I am looking for a good highway tire that can handle water without getting squirrely. Although I live in a snowy area, I have not had any issues with snow traction, so I think that is not an overriding factor.

I am currenlty considering the Dueller HL's again or the Michellin MTX.

I have Michelin Cross Terrains (275/55/R17) on Ole Blue. They have about 60K on them and will need to be replaced soon. Over $200 each at most places.

I will probably get them again, but would be interested in alternates that perform and last as well for a lot less bux.

myself I have never owned a good set of bridgestone or bf goodrich tires, goodyears were good to me and michelins were too but now I run PIRELLI tires on my truck they get the most wet weather traction of any tire I have put on it!

Kumho's from Tirerack. Great tire, great price. I run them (15") on my 1/2 ton van, never a problem.

The Michelin LTX tires have performed exceptional in my experience, to me they're worth the few extra bucks.

General Grabber AT is a 60k mi tire with mudder tire traction (also great in the Minnesota snow) and are as quiet and smooth as a highway tires, also I should mention that they cost 20-30% less then the Goodyears, BF Goodrich, and Bridgstones, and 50-60% less then the Michelins!!

I agree. With proper rotation 80k is the norm rather than the exception.

P series are 35 psi , the LT series are 50 psi tires. I like the LT's at 42-44 psi

To me a tire is a tire. You get what you pay for just like anything else. I use the street tread design for my summer use and mud/snow for the winter of the BFGoodrich Commercial T/A's. Good enuff for fleet use, good enuff for me.

On our half ton trucks, we run Toyos. (cannot remember size) We used to run michelins, but they weren't quite as good on the tahoe, as they are on the 3/4 ton. On the 3/4 ton suburban and silverado, we have been running michelin LTX tires. When we changed them a couple weeks ago, we put Toyos on the front of the suburban, and left the michelins on the back. At this point, I am not yet sure what dad is gonna put on when we change the back tires next year.

Maybe it's because they were entry level tires but the Goodyear Wranglers wore very unevenly on my explorer. The Goodyears that came on my Titan are ok so far but then again most any tire is at only 3K miles. I've seen the same tire on older Suburban's and the owner told me they wore unevenly.

I paid a little extra for Michelins over a year ago. I'm normally the cheapskate who always buys the 2nd choice up from cheapest but I've been converted. Smooth, brakes well, wear holding up good, and no hydroplaning.

The Goodyear Wranglers I had on it were total crap from the word go. They wore out real fast, spun on wet roads, and shook. No amount of balancing could make it go away either.

I say go for the Michelins.

That's 100% consistent with my experience too. You could see varying height differences from one "knob" to the next. I needlessly changed out a set of wheel bearings because of those blasted Wranglers trying to locate the vibration.

I'm pretty well locked in or the Michelin LTX's. From all the history and reviews, they have a pretty good background..

Gawsh, the goodyears suck. had them on the tahoe when we first bought it. (don't know the size - whatever fits a half ton chevy) Had 2 flats with those tires, and dad hasn't had a flat on a car in more than 20 years before that (about 14 of those using michelin LTX tires) Also, about 2 years ago, Dad drove a few hundred miles with a 3 inch lag screw in the tire of his tahoe. (back when we still had the michelins) We know exactly where it came from (had a piece of porch stored in the carport, and when we picked it up a few weeks before changing tires, one lag was missing - We found it when dad was mounting them 3 weeks later) Had to have imbalanced it all to hell and back.
The toyos seem to be a bit better on the tahoe, but on the 3/4 tons, I think he hasn't noticed much difference - except the toyos are a bit cheaper.

I was real happy with a set of cooper discover h/t on my Exped. Especially since they only cost $525 at the time. Got over 60k, quiet, smooth and were good in the water/snow. Best bang for your buck in tires, if you ask me.

Also, the tirerack has a rating system for tires they sell. Tons of feedback from users. Check out tirerack.com.

I don't listen when people say one company is bad, since they all make cheap tires and most make a quality tire too. Your experience is going to depend more on the particular model of tire and not the company.

My last bit of advice, when getting estimates get an otd (out the door) price. mounting, balancing and disposal can vary a lot.

FWIW: Cooper is an american company not a french one.

another raving review of the michelin ltx m/s

ntb had a deal a couple of weeks ago...buy 4 get $100 back. that made these comparable to others and cheaper than what came on it.

check the reviews on tirerack. these have been great so far...quiet, smooth, awesome in rain/water. i haven't been on the ramp since i got them but they are siped more than others, i used to slip on the firestones.

FWIW: Cooper is an american company not a french one.

I LOVE my Cooper H/T plus's. My Silverado came with Goodyears, and when it came time to get new tires, I wanted a decent low-profile tire that looked nice, but performed even better.

The tire shop guy told me to try the Cooper's. I was hesitant, because the price was so low... It was $50 a tire cheaper than the Goodyears. But he said if I tried them and wasn't happy with him, he'd give me my money towards another tire. (kind of outgoing on his part, as he doesn't sell many 20" tires.

I know today if I were to buy another tire, I wouldn't hesitate to buy another set of these Coopers. Unbelievable wet/dry/snow/ice traction. And they have a serrated look to them, that looks pretty sharp.
