Maybe this is a stupid question, I have a 1982 in-line 6 115hp motor, I have a new stator that I am installing, boat shop said it was bad.

I have a manual but the new stator has "special instructions" it states... "Ground the additional black lead to the engine using the ground screw which secures the mercury switch"

To do this I would need to lengthen that ground wire an additional foot, why couldnt I ground the wire somewhere else, it would be the same metal that the mercury switch is connected to.
