30yr old starter was locking up, going "click click" also even biggest hammer wouldnt help (after it went swimming when bilge pump didnt work) . Just replaced with new sierra starter (new solenoid built in too) . Worked fine 5 cranks or more within 24 hrs. Then it started singing "click, click" just like the old one. Towed back to docks again. I banged very gently but it kept clicking. Battery fully charged, and it worked well til it didnt. Am wondering it there is a 2nd solenoid that is bad that i am missing but cant find a diagram to follow. Boat is 1982 Stingray, Mercruiser 140 hp mc1, 4 cylinger GM 181 cid. No other (related) problems. Much appreciate advice or pointers to diagrams, parts... This forum rocks!

you have a slave solenoid that powers the starters solenoid you should also check the ground cable connections

Start at battery and clean every connection as you head back to starter.. This is battery, pilot (slave) solenoid, block and starter. All connections need to be shiny metal.

If any cables are stiff or corroded, replace them
