I know, I know, it's nothing to get your heart rate up for. But I made it and I am proud!! :p

I set about to buy a bolt on mount but I did not like how they fit the tire to the trailer frame. Soooooooo I ran down to the local scrap metal dealer, spent 5.40$ incl tax, for three pieces of metal.

With my trusty Sawzall, a metal blade and a wood V block, I fashioned this mount to fit exactly where and how I wanted it. I had a friend weld the pieces together and a trailer builder weld it on to the trailer frame.

With my little spray buddy, I gave the mount a coat of catalytic acrylic enamel.

The store bought versions let the tire hang too low below the frame
Very cool, I hope those guide-on side rails do their job and keep your keel from gouging on that if it's a windy retreival.

Love the paint job, very cool.

Good eye KRS, I took that into account when I fashioned the mount. A couple of those pictures make the mount look a lot closer to the hull than it really is. I built those side boards back in '76, when I worked for an auto dealer. I used the torch to heat them and the hydraulic press to bend them in the shape of my coathanger pattern.

They have been a lifesaver for currents and crosswinds for many a year. I just point the boat, close my eyes, hit the throttle, then shut off the engine and hit that fine OMC outdrive tilt toggle and she slides straight up to the bow chalk. It will miss the new mount handily.

I'm only 31 years late carrying a spare tire. I came back from a Boy Scout Crab trip last october, parked the boat in front of the house and when I came out to put it away, the tire was flat. The tires looked perfect but were cracked down at the base of the tread. It just let loose after I arrived home.

looks like you use standard lugs, so you don't have to carry extra wrenches.

For right now I do have standard lugs, but I'm going to buy a set of keyed lugs. I'll use one on the spare and one each on the rolling tires. Something tells me that my spare won't stay put very long if I don't lock it up.

You did a good job but I have to wonder about the promiity of the bracket to the boat. From the pictures it looks to be very close. I did the same with my mount but moved it up front by the bow.

Can you still see that right rear tire in your rear view mirror?
