I just picked up an 11 year old John Deere, 9 hp, 24" cut from my BIL for $400. The thing is immaculate, electric start, paint looks brand new & I just went through it adjusting and lubing. It was previously owned by a priest who had a 2-car paved driveway, well maintained by dealer.

My last one was an Ariens 5hp that I spent too much time cobbling back together last winter, bought in 1988. It still runs & blows snow great but I want to spend less time "fixing up" this year and more time clearing snow.

What's your experience with JD's?

Thx.

What engine is on that unit? We had two JD units at the landscape company I worked for and apart from eating the skids they were great. I did do one thing that helped them with wet snow though- I lined the discharge chutes with a teflon-impregnated sheet to keep the snow from sticking. That was the only issue we had. Ours were new when I started at the company and 4 years later they were still very reliable units. $400 is dirt cheap.

It has a Tecumseh engine. When the snow is wet, I usually spray the chute, impeller & auger with silicone spray. Your Teflon solution is a good more permanent one though.

My dad worked for Tecumseh. The running joke was that Briggs workers bought Tecumseh motors and Tecumseh workers bought Briggs motors.

That's pretty good. My Ariens has a Tecumseh, still running strong.

Re: "New" snowblower

I bought a 10 HP Yard Machine years ago with the Tecumseh engine on it. Been running a good synthetic 5W20 oil in it.

Still stars and runs like new. Been having to do some welding on augers and paddles, though. Just bought a Craftsman 18 HP tractor with a snow thrower, chains, weights, mower, and bagger this spring. It's got a lot of hours on it so it's needing some love, but nothing major. Gotta love my wife. Saw it at a moving sale for $799, sic'd her on the owner, and got it for $650.

I haven't bought a small engine since I went nuts on synthetic oil for them all.

I have been actively rebuilding my plow truck and I am on a mission to weld in a ton of metal to kill some of the rotted panels........ WHY?????? because it has a heater !!!! :D I am spoiled and enjoy heat while I remove the white stuff ;)

Yes the JD is a nice machine :)

Hi Bob--I'm one of those out-in-the-weather snow removers. I'm even selling the cab attachment that came on the machine!:)
