1979 Twin 350s, Alpha 1 Gen 1 with old style shift plates that mounted on the rear of the engine. The kind with a reverse lockout valve integrated into the shift plate and arm.

My interrupt switches went bad so I finally decided to buy the only option available which is the new Merc Shift plate assembly (Part No. 864363A) Basically, all it is is a new Gen II style shift plate that mounts on the elbow with the new plunger style interrupt switch.

I have one mounted w/ cables adjusted and will water test tomorrow or Sunday but I have 2 questions:

1) The plate comes with the new "shift Assist" Assembly. This basically mounts in parallel with the remote control shift cable. This "Shift Assist" actually seems to make it harder to shift since when you shift into froward it compresses a spring inside the shift assist arm and in reverse, it stretches the spring. So how exactly does this "assist" in shifting? Is it only meant to help with pulling into neutral? For now, I've left it off as it made shifting into gear significantly harder. So hard in fact I'd be afraid of flooring it fighting it into gear...

2) I left the old plate on because it contains the "reverse lockout valve" My understanding is this valve prevents the drives from raising when the boat is in reverse. So, now it won't be working as the cables no longer move the arm that activate the valve. Should I just leave the arm in the neutral position and run with it or should I do something else? How is reverse lockout handled on newer boats that use these newer style shift plates?

If you are having that much problems shifting with the shift assist spring, you probably have a bad shift cable (The one from the controller to the engine) disconnect it and have someone hold it to prevent movement while you shift it from the controller. If they can make it difficult to move, you need a new cable. The inside of the cables get worn and cause them to bind.
As far as the reverse lockout, in service bulletin 2002-01 Rev 1 it states you need to get a new trim pump with the reverse lockout in the pump instead of the lockout on the plate.

All the cables are brand new Don - every one. No nasty bends. The shifters are brand new too and are still "factory" stiff which may be part of the issue. I'll look it all over again today.

Thanks for the info on the Rev lock out... I'll pickup new style trim pumps (uhg)... Any major issue with running w/o them for a while? Do they actually ride up that fast?

You might make sure the cables have room to pivot back and forth on the shifter itself. Normally those springs don't cause any shift problems like that.

The drive will probably kick up immediatly when put into reverse and could damage the ujoints & gimbal bearing.

Yikes! Kick right up? Wow... I need a plan B. Replacing these pumps is going to be a lot of time and work. If I place the shift arm in the reverse position do I just lose the ability to trim up until it's moved to neutral or forward? That wouldn't be a problem for now as I rarely need to trim up under way. Or, does the valve work regardless of the position of the arm? If I just leave it hooked up will it continue to function?

I checked the shifter and the cable runs. They look like they pivot freely. I think the shifter is too stiff... I'll mess around with it...
