Fixing to time my new set up. My plan is to put in at dock and deep enough to start the motor with outdrive down. Adjust idle to around 700rpm after in warms up. The book says basic at 6btdc and 23btdc (stroboscope) 3.000r/min. I assume from the book (VP workshop manual that includes the 570) that total advance is 29btdc at 3000rpms. Question: does total need to be done with drive engaged or what do ya'll suggest with a new (re-man) motor before break in.

I'm pretty excited, as some of you may remember I've fought this sucker since I got it. Come to find out the block didn't match up with the heads and was cracked and welded. Dead cylinders were balanced by manipulating the firing order. Looks like someone really took someone and I ended up with it. Learned a lot though, so I'm grateful. Even had to take the drive apart to get the bolt ring in...I had taken it out after the old motor was pulled and didn't put it back before putting the flywheel housing through the hole and the motor was all hooked up. Re-built the carb, cleaned everything, wire wheeled all the bolts, and put everything back using shop manual specs. Yep, primed the whole motor with an old distributor that had the gears off and lined everything up with a spark board at #1 TDC. Fired her off and adjusted the valves. I think I like this stuff!

In neutral to set timing and check advance timing.

OK, so 29deg btdc at 3000 rpms for total advance? I'm using a light with tachometer, so can the curve be checked with progressive advance related to rpms? Do you have a chart for a cruiser style boat that shows correct curve?

The tech/mechanic that advised me during my rebuild is out of town and I want get this on the water, so I wouldn't ask if he was around. I don't want to cause problems, so I appreciate as detailed a procedure as possible. Is there's a link to a sticky or other? Thanks Don S!!

You need an advance type timing light, you set your timing light on 29? then bring the engine up to 3000 rpm and look at the timing marks, the mark on the balancer should line up with the 0? TDC tab.
