1988 Evinrude 150XP

Last fall
Tach was erratic and then stopped working completely. Voltage gauge was showing 16 to 19 volts at 3/4 throttle..
Replaced Reg/Rec (New CDI brand)
Engine started fine and ran well.

Now
Tach works but shows 7000 RPMs at half throttle and 1500 at idle.
Voltage gauge appears to be working correctly showing about 13 to 14 volts at 3/4 throttle.
Engine starts fine and runs well.

Any idea on the tach and what might be causing these erratic readings.

Its a Teleflex 7000 RPM gauge and the selector switch is pointing to 6P. I believe that is the proper setting. Any other ideas?

Try moving the selector switch through the other positions and then back to 6 and see what happens.

Boobie is correct, the position switch itself can get minor corrosion on it with age. Moving the switch to another position, then back tends to "clean" the contacts. Did it work when you moved the switch?

Moved the selector switch to the other positions several times and back to 6p. Still no improvement. Any other ideas? Don't know what to check or do next to solve this problem.

When you moved the switch did you get different readings. If you did then perhaps one of those positions will do the job.

I tend to have a lot of issues with cdi replacements also. But they have an incredible warranties, call them. On the other hand, tachs do go bad.

The boat was not running when I toggled thru the different positions. Perhaps I will try that the next time I am out. I probably will call CDI after the holiday. Perhaps they will have some ideas. Thank you for the suggestions.
