I have a 115hp Johnson 2 cyc 1995 and 170 freedom Four Winns. I just purchased. I am not familiar with 2 cyc engines and the oil injection that goes with them. I see that I have some oil accumulation around the front of the carbs and it seem excessive. How do you know if the oil injection is working properly? Isn't there suppose to be an air filter in front of the carbs?
It seems to me that the engine is running with to much oil injected. How do i know?

If you're new to this I would suggest getting an OEM factory service manual. It tells all about your motor in them and how to check things out.

They don't have air filters. Excess oiling can be caused by an air leak in the gas line or the fuel side of the VRO pump going bad. Test the oiling by monitoring the oil tank level while running the motor on 50:1 pre-mix fuel. It can take a while to notice a drop in the oil tank level as the motor uses 1 gal. of oil for 50 gals. of gas. The extra oil in the gas won't hurt anything. Check all the gas lines and connections for air leaks, they don't always leak gas out.

Interesting! I guess there is no dust on water. I'll look for that air leak. Oil level moved so I know that it's working but that's all. Around the opening (intake) of the carb's I see the excess oil. It is starting to collect at the bottom of the engine case. I noticed it while wiping the outside down. It doesn't seem to be doing any damage, but it starting to make a mess inside the housing. This particular 115hp has always been a hard starter. Lot's of priming to get it going. Maybe the extra oil is coming during this period of operation.

Appreciate your input.

Chronic hard starting may indicate a fuel delivery problem. Are you getting excessive oil dripping from the exhaust at the gearcase / prop also? Other issue: there should be a rubber tube from the bottom of the air silencer cover (what would hold an air filter if they used them) to the engine block. It's to drain any fuel / oil into the crankcase. There should also be a gasket between the 2 halves of the air silencer. You should not be getting a lot of oil fuel / oil collecting inside the cowling. Check to make sure the tube is there and not clogged. Check the nipples it pushes onto also, they have a small ID, I think the hose is 1/8" ID.

The VRO pump on this could be over-oiling. If you have an engine that is especially hard to start, and all other fuel lines are good there is a test outlined in the manual. Some times you can pull one of the carb drain plugs and notice that the fuel/oil mixture is excessively thick.
