Ok, I have changed the water pump 2 times and have taken it apart and put it back togeather 4 times. The engine will not pee. I have used a hose to by pass the pump and water comes out of the pee hole. When the lower unit is put back togeather and the engine is started no pee.
It a 1996 Johnson 25 outboard.
I'm about to throw this motor off the dock, this is driving me crazy. Any help would be great.

Several things to check:

Make sure that the water tube grommet is properly seated in the housing and lubricate it so that the water tube does not push it in and block the housing;

Make sure that the air bleed hole at the top of the housing is clear, or the pump can't prime;

Use something like heavy grease to make sure that the impeller key stays in place;

and, be sure that the water supply is above the actual pump before starting - the pumps are not self priming.

Don't give up on it yet. This is a minor problem. I don't think the water pump is the problem. Certainly changing a new one for another new one won't solve the problem. If you can be sure that what you did below has been done correctly, then I would check and make sure that the thermostat isn't stuck shut. You can remove the thermostat and see if the waterpump gushes water out while it's running. If it does, then your water pump problem has been corrected. Your tell tale hose could just have a clog too.:cool:

have a 33 evinrude that was driving me nuts about not pumping water after a fresh impeller install.the solution was to liberally coat the mating surfaces of the impeller housing and the lower unit with sealer and i had a perfectly working impeller afterwards,lots of water!i took the thing apart about a dozen times one day until i tried that and was just about to give up!i tried everything and i mean everything until i did the sealer trick nothing worked!

Dirtdobbers are bad to stop up the pee hole. Use a stiff piece of wire to clear it.
