New Prop doesn't quite fit - Different Thrust washer?

I purchased a used stainless steel prop for my 1994 Merc alpha one. It fits on the splines just fine. However, it seems like it goes too deep into the gear housing and I can hear metal on metal rubbing when I spin it by hand. This is without even tighting the hub. The old alum. doesn't do that. Is it possible I need a different thrust washer that thicker? The prop numbers are: (on shaft) 48-74268A4 21P. On the end of the hub it: 48-268 21. There is an addtional set of number on the end of the hub: 1271. It looks like there is a rubber fitting on the shaft. The alum. prop doesn't have the rubber fitting.

Thanks for your help.
