Upon further inspection: Yeah that kinda sucks. Thought after '93 or so they were all Fastrac?

Took possession today. She's a lil crustier than we generally like, but appears to be unmolested. And has a nice shiny bubble butt ...

Sorry to "pop" yer bubble but that's not Fastrac trim.......
Finally figgered it out. It's the different/later model motor mount covers that always fool me into thinkin it's Fastrak?

Yeah, a little crusty on the old bolts. I like bubbles.

Hey, a question for ya: the throttle cams on the later ones appears to have been developed to provide a different throttle curve vs the old one. Any point trying to convert the older one?

Haven't looked at it that close yet, but I'll bet they're the same. I'll let ya know.

Besides being plastic they look the same to me?

I'm referring more to the large slotted cam that moves the advance. You can see it's curve isn't linear as compared with the old straight arm on mine.

No reed stuffers?! Thought the later prop rated 115s had all the good stuff?

I know the spl stands for special. And I know that the 88 spl . is basically the same exact motor as the 90. And the 112 spl is the 115. But why do they make the spl line of engines and what if any are the real internal differences. I mean... 2 hp from the 88 to the 90. Or 112 to the 115. 2 or 3 horse less is nothing ?

There is no difference internally.--It is a MARKETING concept.--The SPECIAL motors were first offered without oil injection and trim/ tilt.-----It was for those on a budget .---And for those who did not want those features !!

No they didn't. It almost looks like the engine got them if the stuffers were in the parts bin on the assembly line. If not, too bad so sad. The difference they make is small, but a lot of small differences do add up.
