My 1986 150 hp evinrude has developed a new problem with the ignition. The port side middle cylinder is not firing below about 2800 rpm. All others fire fine at idle. The middle cylinder seems to fire fine at 2800 rpms and up. I have swapped wires and coils and will swap power packs tonight. Does anyone know if this problem is usually caused by the power pack or the sensor coil in the timer base? Are there any other suspect causes?

Sounds like pack, but I would check timer and stator before I installed new pack

Re: New Prob with 150 hp Evinrude

This is an update to my problem, for the benefit of all interested who may have a similar situation, which I have solved. The source of my problem was not the power packs, it was a broken conductor within the insulation of the timer base(sensor coils) wiring. During trouble shooting I swapped the power packs from left to right sides and lost all ignition. I returned the packs to original postion and re-established the problem. I did this about three times before realizing that plugging and unplugging the power pack was wiggling the sensor wires enough to cause the loss of conductivity inside the insulation of the wire. After repairing these wires all seems fine. Apparently when going to wot the timer base would advance and force the wire to make contact explaining why my cylinder fired at higher rpm and not at idle.
