new powerhead new water pump now stopped pumping water?

So i just put a rebuilt powerhead on my 1995 70hp johnson, also a new water pump. everything looked good for the first few minutes, then the indicator stream slowed and stopped...... tryed again and saw steam from indicator hose.

I have pulled the lower off, pulled the pump apart found that it had spun the impeller on the keyway part way around. reassembled pump sprayed some silicone lube on everything to prevent sticking while its dry.

still no water from the indicator hose just a little steam.

i am scared to let it run more than 10-15 sec as i dont want to damage anything.


i think i need to pull the lower again, as well as the thermostat and put a hose on the water tube to see if there is flow through the engine?


if not that what should i be doing?

Are you testing the motor on muffs or in the water? Make sure that your water intake screen isn't clogged and starving your motor of water.

Is the impeller key sheared or possibly in backwards?odd that the impeller could spin past the keyway.

the key was new and correctly installed when removed it looked deformed and smashed a bit, i can grab a pic later. the motor seemed very very tight and turned very slowly untill it fired the first time. then seemed normal.

when i take the lower off again i plan to inspect the pump just to make sure its together right its the sierra kit complete with housing #18-3389


could it be a stuck thermostat? i thought the indicator hose was before the thermostat in the flow chart?

screens do not appear to be blocked, and yes im on a hose.

a) pump not assembled correctly
b) you missed the pump outlet with the water tube
c) the grommet in the pump outlet got folded over during final assembly
d) incorrect parts used
e) pump body not well sealed to wear plate
f) pump housing or wear plate scored (if complete kit not installed), most do not have the judgment to determine whether metal parts are reuseable
g) pump air bleed hole plugged
h) water not deep enough for the pump to do its thing
i) debris stuck in water passages
j) stuck thermostat or vernitherm (if so equipped)
k) key missing or incorrect
l) you went cheap and installed only an impeller, rather than a complete OEM kit
m) diverters missing or incorrectly installed, (if so equipped)
n) pump rotates clockwise looking from the top

The vanes make no difference ... if you install them incorrectly oriented, they will flip to the correct position upon rotation.

took things apart again, all looks correct.

spun drive shaft with drill, seems to ppump an ample amount of water.

attached hose best as i could to water tube, some leakage occured but it did push water out the indicator tube. i did NOT pull the thermostat

plan is currently to back it in the water in the morning and see if it shows water functioning as its intended. likely wont leave the trailer.

a friend mentioned he has trouble with his suzuki doing this while trying to run it on muffs. any thoughts there?

lastly i dont think i have a container suitable to run the thing in the tub i used while spinning the pump via drill i sort of had to lay the lower unit down at an angle to submerge all the holes below the foil no way i could do it while assembled

i think this is all good, i may need different muffs. indicator shows a strong stream while idling in the river, i did take it off the trailer but only did a loop it the no wake zone as when you add throttle it starts to miss and stumble idle was a tad rough so i wondered.

once its cool i need to retorque the head bolts and i will check plugs for fouling tho i doubt it could foul a plug in 20 minutes even with the 25-1 fuel mix. i am using a vro pump with the oil side plugged off, dont see any fuel leaks but the primer bulb does go soft......

The primer bulb is not supposed to stay hard after the motor starts.

so softened is ok....good guess that end of its fine then.

thinking very strongly about letting a reputable shop go over this thing make sure timing is set correctly and do link and sync,
