When we moved into this house, it had a wooden deck for a patio. It was built on grade with the joists half buried. When they excavated to install the joists, they just threw the dirt to the outside perimieter of the deck. This made sure that when it rained, runnoff drained back against the foundation, rotting out the wood and making the deck slippery when wet. Not just slippery, like ice.....with oil on it! After we all busted our backsides several times, we tore it out and had concrete poured today. Man it looks great! We have wanted to do it since we moved in three years ago, but just now got the $$$$ for it. Turns out the guy that owned the company that did the work used to sell janitorial supplies and was one of my vendors when I owned the restaurant. Small world. Anyhoo, we are all soooooo happy to have the concrete. Now maybe the dogs will track in less dirt.
